Daechwita - 대취타
by Suga
Suga is a South Korean rapper, songwriter, and producer (hiphop and R&B music), he debuted as a member of the South Korean pop idol group BTS. After debuted 3 years, he released his first solo mixtape, Agust D, and released his second solo mixtape, D-2, its lead single "Daechwita"
The artical content is about Suga’s constant battle against himself and how the desire to achieve his dreams, also against the powerful, cruel and dangerous part of his personality, which is the demons he must overcome to get there. Moreover, there is a traditional Korean music, adding an urban twist with his rap lyrics, reflect both of his status, where he plays both a king and a version of his own persona. Therefore, I decided to present the battle of King and a version of his own persona in the magazine spread. I created shapes by illustrator and connect those to create the characters and the weapons. I chose the dramatic angle (position) for the design to present challenges, and the endless battle of himself. Daechwita is a traditional Korean musical genre born in the late Joseon dynasty, which used to be performed in royalty processions, was characterized by including wind instruments and percussion. Today it continues to be used on special occasions and for military purposes. That is the reason why I chose yellow for the king and green for the other side of himself. I want to bring both old life style and the morden life style to the design, so I decided to bring the two different weapons which is
knife and gun.
The font of the tile “Deachwita” , I chose the strong and bold brush type. The reason I chose this brush is it has a dramatic feeling (battle) and similar to ink. Most of the ancient tradition in Korea , they use calligraphy which is a visual art reflecting the Korean tradition of artistic writing in Hangul. And the main tools are paper, brush, ink stick, and ink stone. Since the tittle was decorative, I keep the body copy simple. Fianlly, with the Korean script, I chose a traditional handwrite type, but still keep it simple, so the view will not distracted by different fonts.
